The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, England, is currently exhibiting paintings by Victorian artist Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. He specialised in extremely meticulous portrayals of life in ancient Greece and Rome, and was a very prolific artist. He was falling from popularity by the time of his death in 1912, but his work has recently gained new admirers. Scenes from a past life
Article Abstract:
The Royal Academy in London, England, is currently exhibiting a sequence of 780 gouache paintings by Charlotte Salomon. These were painted between 1940 and 1942, when Salomon was in her mid-20s. The paintings, most of which have a written text, tell the story of the artist and her family. Their emotional focus is the difficult and intense three-way relationship between Salmon as a teenager, her glamorous stepmother and her stepmother's singing teacher.
