Should Parliament turn away from lone parent benefit?
Article Abstract:
The Labour MPs who are rebelling against the UK government's decision to cut benefits for single parents are very misguided. They are failing to take account of the fact that 67% of voters agree with the government that single parents should be expected to go out to work once their youngest child enters full-time education and that 47% would be in favour of removing benefits from single parents who refuse to accept offers of paid work. It is vital that the government is able to reform the welfare system, which is currently inefficient and excessively large.

While the rich get richer, it's still the poor that get the blame
Article Abstract:
New definitions of poverty are emerging in the UK. Poverty is no longer associated with very poor housing, lack of material goods and disease. Instead, poverty is more closely linked with inequality of opportunity. In particular, access to employment has become a key indicator of poverty. Education plays a vital role in ensuring that children can break away from poverty, and for this reason recent figures about the extent of illiteracy and innumeracy should be a cause for great concern. It is now time to consider ways to ensure that advantage and disadvantage do not pass from one generation to the next.
