Who knows what a graduate is? Discuss
Article Abstract:
The process of becoming a graduate has always been very imprecise in the UK, and this has made it hard to define what a graduate actually is. It is certainly true that graduates find it easier to gain employment than someone who is not a graduate, and that graduates earn more than non-graduates. However, being a graduate does not necessarily mean that a person has even basic numeracy and literacy skills. Universities cannot say with any clarity what the possession of their degree means, and standards very greatly from university to university.

Yes, they pull a few (apron) strings, but is that a crime?
Article Abstract:
Action by the UK Commons Home Affairs Committee against the Freemasons has a number of negative connotations. It goes against the freedom of individuals to join together to form an organization, and also represents an attack on the social foundations of liberty. The state should be able to both tolerate and protect the privacy of its citizens, and should not be seen to be bullying individual organizations. In this case, politicians have made an exaggerated response to allegations about Masonic involvement in conspiracy.

Smooth talker for a rough fight
Article Abstract:
The UK's universities must now have expertise in public affairs, according to Diana Warwick, chief executive of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors. (CVCP). She aims to make CVCP a body with a strong political voice, and is highly respected for her political know-how. Universities are now putting much more pressure on the government, calling for more funding immediately if 'top-up' fees are not to be imposed on students.
