Who took me hostage?
Article Abstract:
Kim Housego, who was held hostage in Kashmir for 17 days in Jun 1994 by Islamic militants, was unable to prevent himself reliving the experience when he learned in Aug 1995 that one of five hostages who had been kidnapped later by the same group had been murdered. Housego eventually decided that he had many unanswered questions which could only be tackled by returning to Kashmir. He did so in Nov 1996, feeling both anxiety and curiosity. He learned that all parties involved in a hostage crisis have their own aims, and that these do not necessarily include the release of the hostages.

My hostage and my wife
Article Abstract:
Kidnapping of women is not an unusual event in the Central Asian republic of Georgia. In some cases, kidnapping takes place where parents do not approve of a marriage, while in other cases kidnapping involves a young woman being taken by a man for whom she has no feelings. She is held hostage by the man and his friends, and is sometimes raped. If this happens, she is forced to marry the man concerned. Police and healthcare workers receive no training to deal with kidnapping, and there is little prospect of pressing charges against the kidnapper.

Family ties that set us free
Article Abstract:
Britons Camilla Carr and Jon James, who have been released after spending over a year as hostages in Chechnya, Russia, were able to draw on their own deep emotional resources to sustain them during their time in captivity. They also benefited from the fact that they come from families where strong emphasis is placed on physical and spiritual endurance. Members of Carr's family in particular showed great resilience and determination.
