Whoever wins, Ladakh loses
Article Abstract:
Modern warfare tends to hurt the innocent, and this is illustrated by the case of Ladakh, Kashmir. There is conflict between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, and Ladakh has been affected by the fighting. Ladakh lost its independence in 1843, when it was conquered by a Sikh general for Kashmir's maharaja. The valleys are painstakingly cultivated, and the people have their own traditions. They would seek to retain their identity no matter who their rulers were, and they are not concerned about whether they are ruled by Pakistan or India.

Kashmiris prepare for nuclear war
Article Abstract:
The decision by India to test three nuclear bombs has considerably added to the tension between India and Pakistan over the Himalayan region of Kashmir. Most Kashmiris, more than 90% of whom are Muslims, believe that Kashmir became part of India by deception. India claims that the Pakistani side is fuelling insurgency on India's side of the ceasefire line that runs through Kashmir. Pakistanis fear that India will begin to punish Kashmiris on the Pakistani side of the Line of Control, possibly sparking off violent conflict.

Indian top gun is nation's hate figure
Article Abstract:
A conflict has intensified between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, and two Indian MiG-27 aircraft have been lost, with one pilot dying. Pakistan claims to have shot down the aircraft, and the other pilot, Flight Lieutenant Nachi Keta, has become a hate figure in Pakistan. Indian prime minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, is also criticised in Pakistan, where he is seen as having attacked Pakistan after signing a peace treaty. Villages are affected since crops cannot be tended and children are prevented from going to school.
