The short life and death of a UN mission
Article Abstract:
More than 1,500 refugees and ex-patriates have been evacuated from the United Nations (UN) compound in Dili, East Timor. The small number of aid workers and military liaison officers who remained behind have moved to the Australian Consulate building. This marks the end of the UN Assistance Mission in East Timor, although the UN is emphasizing that the mission has only been relocated and will return and resume its work when the threat from Indonesian soldiers and pro-Indonesian militias has receded.

Indonesia begins to withdraw armed forces
Article Abstract:
There are indications that the Indonesian armed forces are starting to withdraw from East Timor as international troops prepare to establish a presence there as the International Force East Timor. However, it is clear that there will still be many Indonesian troops and pro-Indonesian militias on the ground in East Timor when international troops enter. Militia leaders in West Timor have threatened violence against the international forces.
