Who'll be the belle of the charity ball?
Article Abstract:
The resignation of Diana, Princess of Wales, as patron of 104 charities has left them shocked and wondering who will replace her. The Princess is skilled at persuading people to give generously and has helped lift morale among charity staff. A Charities Aid Foundation survey indicates that members of the Royal family are the most sought after patrons for charities. Among charities for which Diana has helped boost funds are the British Deaf Association, the Ty Hafan hospice, for whom Luciano Pavarotti gave a concert at her request and the British Red Cross.

Ian and Anthony Erskine: twins in life, twins in death
Article Abstract:
The murder in 1996 of Anthony Erskine in the culmination of a feud between his family and a neighbouring family had a particularly damaging impact on his twin brother Ian. It was clear that Ian was not able to come to terms with his brother's death, and his subsequent suicide has not really come as a great surprise. The twins were extremely close, but were different in some ways. Ian struggled at school, and was unable to gain employment. In contrast, Anthony was calmer, more intelligent and more able to make friends.

My movie, right or wrong
Article Abstract:
The film 'Michael Collins,' which portrays the Irish nationalist who agreed a treaty with Lloyd George in 1921 which partitioned the country, does not support violence, according to Neil Jordan, its director. The film has attracted considerable controversy, but Jordan feels that its most outspoken critics are people who have not actually seen it. Critics have tended to overlook the fact that the film also aims to demonise Eamon de Valera, who fought against the treaty.
