Who's abusing Lolita now?
Article Abstract:
The film version of Vladimir Nabokov's 'Lolita' planned by Adrian Lyne is not likely to be of a very high quality. Lyne has rejected the script he commissioned from Harold Pinter, and will probably use one produced by a second-rate scriptwriter instead. He will cause controversy by portraying the character of Lolita correctly in age terms, using a girl of only 12 or 13, attracting criticism for showing under-age sex. The film will probably cause a short-term sensation, but the quality of the original novel will endure.

History rebuilds itself, this time as farce
Article Abstract:
The project to rebuild Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, which is now nearing completion, has attracted very mixed responses. In some ways, the scheme can be seen as a rebuke to English cultural attitudes, highlighting how Shakespeare's influence has been ignored. Many people had a very negative attitude, believing that audiences would not be attracted to a theatre which did not have latest facilities and comforts. For some, the whole scheme is a fake, portraying the views of an age which seeks to make art and culture easy.

Drinking in the no-hope saloon
Article Abstract:
'Cheers' is an American television comedy programme about a bar in Boston which has realistic characters. They are typical nasty, hopeless losers. There is none of the sentimentality which spoils many US television programmes. Writer and executive producer Rob Long believes the audience does not realise the private emotions of the characters, but takes them at face value. The signature lulls viewers into a false idea about the show's warmth.
