Why Lilley may be the fall guy
Article Abstract:
UK Conservative party officials have denied that Peter Lilley, the party's deputy leader, will resign after sparking off a crisis in the party by openly rejecting the views of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. However, it is anticipated that party leader William Hague will dismiss Lilley when he reorganizes the Shadow Cabinet in Jun 1999 or Jul 1999. It is reported that Hague was privately greatly angered by Lilley's rejection of Thatcherism, but decided to back Lilley in public.

The decision by UK Conservative party leader William Hague to dismiss the popular Lord Cranborne for negotiating secretly with Prime Minister Tony Blair about a compromise arrangement for reforming the House of Lords has attracted considerable controversy. Hague is now facing a very difficult situation, especially in relation to Conservative peers. By dismissing Lord Cranborne, he has increased the gap between the Conservatives in the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
