Keep off the grass
Article Abstract:
The National Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition of the early paintings of Thomas Gainsborough. This includes 'Bumper,' a hound portrait on wood undertaken at the age of 17, 'Wooded Landscape,' which is rather lacking in realistic detail, and 'Mr and Mrs Andrews,' his best landscape and best portrait. This picture, painted when Gainsborough was only 21, shows no specific view, but gives a delightful overall impression.

Francis Bacon: the man who put the pain into painting?
Article Abstract:
The Hayward Gallery in London, England, is staging an exhibition entitled 'Francis Bacon - The Human Body.' This covers only Bacon's paintings of full figures, and therefore leaves out his animals, landscapes and head-portraits. It is made up of five triptychs and 18 single paintings from the period 1942 to 1986. The visitor is struck by the puzzle of Bacon's swerves of flesh, which are very physical yet cannot be grasped.
