Why Matthew's life was put at risk
Article Abstract:
Biliary atresia is a rare, serious liver condition which affects about one baby in 10,000 to 20,000, but which could be detected by a postnatal check at four weeks. An operation, the Kasai procedure, before six weeks of age has an 80% success rate, but after that, only 30%. Jaundice which does not clear up is a sympton of the disease. Faeces without yellow or green pigment and coloured urine are signs that no-one is taught to look for.
