Interest rates and angels on pinheads
Article Abstract:
The issue of whether interest rates should be reduced or not has attracted considerable attention in the UK. However, slight changes in interest rates will in fact not make much difference to the country's economy. It is mistaken to believe that the economy can be fine-tuned in this way, and it is actually very difficult to predict developments in interest rates. Chancellor Kenneth Clarke and the governor of the Bank of England should instead focus on maintaining economic stability.

Why a small blip in US producer prices set off a violent reaction on Wall Street
Article Abstract:
The UK and the US have both enjoyed a lengthy period of economic growth, but signs of rising inflation are now beginning to emerge. In response, financial markets have become very anxious about the prospect of rising interest rates. Continental Europe is further behind the US and the UK in the business cycle, and also has a long way to go before it catches these countries in the new paradigm, in which low inflation and strong growth are attributed to advances in technology, higher productivity and greater entrepreneurship.
