Prominent figures in the Serbian Orthodox Church, which is regarded as having had its origins in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, played a significant role in fostering the Serbian nationalism which was later exploited by President Slobodan Milosevic. However, the Church is now seeking to distance itself from politics. There is a danger that the Church's most holy places may now become isolated again within a largely Islamic community.
