Why are we walking to work?
Article Abstract:
Lew Adams, the general secretary of Aslef, the UK rail union, which is only 50% as big as it was in 1991, claims to be sorry about the inconvenience caused by the London Underground railway strike, but to have had no alternative. Adams claims that London Underground has gone back on its working arrangements agreement signed in 1995, and he cannot see how there can be arbitration. Adams regrets that David Blunkett, Labour Member of Parliament, interfered by calling for binding mediation.

The arrest of Pinochet has brought my generation in from the cold
Article Abstract:
Those who were young left-wing idealists in the UK in the early 1970s have warmly welcomed the arrest of former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet. They regarded the government of Salvador Allende, which Pinochet overthrew, as offering elected socialism which respected the poor and human rights, and could not understand why some western countries seemed to be willing to make excuses for Pinochet's brutality. They now rejoice in the fact that Pinochet has been restrained.

It's hard to swallow how trivial American politics has become
Article Abstract:
American journalists are persistently focusing on the alleged relationship between US President Bill Clinton and former White House intern Monica Lewsinsky, even though the American public is frequently expressing its disinterest. Most Americans seem to believe that Clinton is entitled to refuse to answer 'intrusive' questions about his consensual sexual relationship with Lewinsky, but the media claims Clinton's deceit is equivalent to the criminal conspiracy engaged by Nixon.
