Why country folk want to hang a 'do not disturb' sign on their gates
Article Abstract:
The rally of residents of the UK's rural areas which is due to take place in London, England, on Mar 1, 1998, is expected to attract more than 100,000 people. Their main motive for attending the rally may well be their feeling that they are not understood by people who live in urban areas. It is possible to counter this argument by stating that urban residents have a clear understanding of rural issues. They are aware that they heavily subsidize the countryside and that those who live in the countryside have a poor record of protecting the environment.

Poverty and inequality never went away - we just stopped looking
Article Abstract:
There is still significant and dangerous poverty in the UK. This problem has been highlighted by the recent report from former government chief medical officer Sir Donald Acheson, in which attention is drawn to the existence of food deserts in inner city areas. There is significant inequality in food and health between the rich and the poor. This inequality is also found in other areas, including crime, with the poor being more at risk of crime than the rich. It is now time to consider ways of making poverty and inequality more visible in UK society.

So the UK is past its best: want to bet?
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom can be assessed using a number of measures such as human development and wealth creation. The UK performs well in terms of these measures and in terms of political freedom and education, but in other areas the UK performs less well. Inequality has increased since the 1980s, and a higher proportion of children lives with a single parent than in the early 1970s when some nine tenths of children lived with two parents. Crime and pollution in terms of carbon dioxide emissions are also serious problems.
