Why is New Labour so scared of Citizen Ken?
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party has decided to select its candidate for Mayor of London, England, by a system apparently designed to block Ken Livingstone, MP for Brent East, England. Livingstone now also faces competition from Frank Dobson for selection as the party's candidate. However, opinion polls indicate that he remains a long way ahead of his rivals to become the UK's first directly elected Mayor. He is the only person who is capable of defeating Jeffrey Archer, the Conservative candidate, but New Labour seems determined to reject him, fearing that becoming Mayor would allow him to develop a left-wing power base.

The Mandelson memorandum
Article Abstract:
Writing a book can be a valuable confidence-building experience, according to Labour MP Peter Mandelson. He has been criticised from within the party, but now feels happy with his own views. He remains extremely proud of the party's achievements, and admires Tony Blair's leadership. He has no regrets about sometimes taking a very uncompromising line, believing that this is the best way to ensure truth, decency and modernisation.
