The long and the short of the medium-term solution
Article Abstract:
Anti-terrorist activities following the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon are likely to last a very long time. They risk overshadowing UK Prime Minister Tony Blair's second term in office. If he has to focus on anti-terrorism issues, then other government activity will grind to a halt.

First steps on a long journey to an unknown destination
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown are taking substantial risks as they seek to change the country's political landscape. They are receiving little support from their colleagues. Closer cooperation between the Labour party and the Liberal Democrats is a long-term project, the outcome of which remains uncertain. There will be considerable discontent in the near future about closer cooperation, particularly among Liberal Democrats. However, the internal opponents of Paddy Ashdown will probably decide that they do not wish to give up the prospect of a small amount of power.

Why life under Prime Minister Gordon Brown would be no different
Article Abstract:
There appears to be considerable tension between UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown. Against this background, it is interesting to consider how the government would be different if Brown had gained the leadership of the Labour party in 1994. The policy agenda would be largely the same, as Brown has influenced it as much as Blair has. Welfare reform would have developed in a similar way, as would government policy on the European single currency. However, Brown as Prime Minister would have introduced a top rate of income tax by now, and it is likely that he would have decided to tax child benefit.
