Telling the sheep from the cows
Article Abstract:
UK scientists testing sheep brains for signs of BSE appear to have used cows' brains instead. However, new DNA tests on frozen samples of brain material used in this research could indicate that the brains did come from sheep after all. This will validate the findings suggesting that BSE could have infected sheep in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

'If we found BSE in sheep it would be a national emergency.' Official
Article Abstract:
UK government officials are rejecting allegations that British lamb may pose dangers to human health and that insufficient action is being taken to assess the risk of BSE entering the sheep population. Some observers believe that BSE, if present in sheep, could pose as great a risk to human health as BSE in cattle. It may also be harder to eradicate than BSE in cattle. It is very hard to assess whether BSE has infected sheep in commercial flocks.
