Why single mothers baffle Mr Lilley

Article Abstract:

It has become common to point to single mothers as being a great drain on public resources, and many government ministers in the past have promised strict measures to discourge single women from becoming mothers. However, the government is now starting to realise that this issue will be very difficult to resolve, and social security minister Peter Lilley seems uncertain about how to approach it. He is probably aware that real social change will only be brought about by improved child care and incentives to encourage single mothers to return to work.

The sneers show Harman has a mighty task

Article Abstract:

UK Minister for Women Harriet Harman is facing many challenges as she attempts to change long-standing views on issues which affect women. A key policy is allowing 500,000 single mothers with school-age children to return to work. At present, single mothers on benefit are not registered as unemployed, and are therefore not covered by the 3 billion pounds sterling welfare-to-work initiative. She is also determined to take action against separated fathers who are not making a financial contribution to the upbringing of their children.

Lilley v Harman: riding the tiger of single motherhood

Article Abstract:

Most UK politicians are very unwilling to discuss the issue of child care, which is a key element in ensuring that more single mothers can go out to work. Instead, they talk in vague terms about family values, and give attention only to the moral issues associated with single parenthood. It is clear that lack of investment in high quality child care will simply perpetuate the social problems which the UK is already seeing, especially crime and bad behaviour in children.
