Oxbridge fees: now the battle is just beginning
Article Abstract:
There is likely to be considerable tension as the UK Department for Education and Employment negotiates with Oxford and Cambridge Universities over the extra 35 million pounds sterling in funding they receive because they run a college system. It is possible that these universities will be able to retain some, if not all, of this additional funding if they agree to a scheme that will attract more state school students. Many education experts believe that it is hard to justify the additional funding, especially as these universities draw their students from such a narrow base.

First timers face the test with tuition fees
Article Abstract:
The crisis in university funding in the UK has made it necessary for the government to impose charges on students, who have until now only paid for their living expenses. However, the charges should not cause any hardship to parents if they operate as the government intends. Parents will probably not have to pay the whole annual fee at once, as the government is encouraging universities to use flexible payment arrangements. The introduction of fees has not deterred potential students from applying to universities.

Academe runs out of credit
Article Abstract:
The UK's universities are now facing severe financial difficulties, and more than half of them are likely to be in a deficit situation by the end of the 1990s. It seems inevitable that students will have to begin paying fees, and some universities may have to merge or close. The problems facing universities will begin to have repercussions for business, as students will not receive the extensive training which they need to make them really useful to future employers.
