Why the golden euro has lost its lustre
Article Abstract:
The launch of the single European currency, the euro, was warmly welcomed by most financial experts, who predicted that the euro would be very popular with investors. In fact, this has not proved to be the case, with the euro having declined steadily in value against the leading world currencies. Analysts point out that the structural factors in favour of a strong euro have not disappeared, but have merely been overshadowed by short-term cyclical developments. It make take considerably longer than initially anticipated for the euro to become one of the world's leading reserve currencies.

South Korea to sign record $55bn IMF bail-out package
Article Abstract:
South Korea is set to tackle its economic crisis with international assistance totalling $55 billion. Of this, $20 billion is expected to come from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with the rest coming mainly from the Asian Development Bank, the US and Japan. The IMF is insisting that South Korea's financial institutions, which are facing severe difficulties, are restructured. Some will be shut down, while some will be merged with healthier operations. South Korea's economic crisis is likely to prompt a significant rise in unemployment.

Are you ready for the euro?
Article Abstract:
The City of London is beginning to make extensive preparations for the 'conversion weekend' that will take place at the beginning of Jan 1999 as the euro is officially launched. The leading financial institutions seem confident about their ability to deal with the switch to the euro, but this is not the case with smaller City firms, some of which have not yet undertaken detailed conversion weekend planning. One of the key problems with the switch to the euro is the level of interdependence between financial institutions.
