Down to the sea in chips
Article Abstract:
The 1998 London Boat Show offered a number of examples of the ways in which PCs can be useful for sailors. PCs can play a valuable role in navigation, and are also beneficial for accessing satellite weather maps and for reading charts. PC navigation systems which are DOS-based can cost as little as 500 pounds sterling. PC-based systems are flexible, can be upgraded easily and are less expensive to run than dedicated navigation systems. However, some observers believe that the chart displays of PC-based systems are not yet of a high enough standard.

The company is now launching a range of computers based on the new G3 PowerPC processor, which is said to be around 30% faster than the Pentium II chip. Other launches include a new version of Metrowerks' Mac-to-Windows application.
