Why utility reform won't be an issue for Labour
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative and Labour parties both acknowledged that there are problems with the country's privatised utilities and the way in which they are regulated. However, both parties also find it hard to give details about these problems and how they should be addressed. The Labour party criticises the high profits made by the utilities and their poor standards of service, but secretly acknowledges the Conservative party's argument, which is that the utilities have seen considerable improvements in efficiency.

Learning to sell the family silver
Article Abstract:
The UK's Labour government seems to be just as committed to privatization as the Conservative governments of Margaret Thatcher were. The most prized state assets have already been sold off, but the latest round of privatizations is still quite attractive. There should be considerable interest in the Tote and the Royal Mint, as well as in the National Air Traffic Services. There are still some quite large businesses which remain in state ownership, as no government has dared to suggest that they should be sold.

Takeover frenzy that blew the fuse
Article Abstract:
The privatisation of the UK's utilities has attracted considerable criticism. It is widely agreed that privatisation can bring advantages, but a poor regulatory framework for the privatised utilities has eliminated many potential benefits. Many observers now feel that the regulatory structure serves only the interests of financial markets and shareholders, with no benefits going to customers and tax payers.
