Dispute over governor's removal key to the issue
Article Abstract:
Home secretary Michael Howard is claimed to have put Derek Lewis, the recently dismissed director-general of the Prison Service, under treat pressure to suspend John Marriott, governor of Parkhurst prison, after some prisoners escaped from that prison. The Conservative party has denied the allegations, stating that Marriott was not suspended and that Lewis was not given instructions to do so. There was no question that the director-general's own job would be at risk if he did not suspend Marriott.

It takes a bad Act to make the law a farce
Article Abstract:
The 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act was intended to resolve difficult issues such as the law of trespass, but has in fact simply created even more legal problems. It has been found that there have been considerable variations in the way in which the Act has been implemented by different police forces. Furthermore, only a small number of prosecutions have been successfully brought under the terms of the Act.
