High-profile policing methods such as targeting individuals who are regarded as potential trouble-makers have served to reduce incidents of football-related violence over recent years. Against this background, police officers are confident that they will be able to prevent any violence relating to the 1996 European Football Championships, despite alarmist media coverage which has claimed that known football hooligans from abroad will be attending matches in the UK. The police are determined to remain in control, and play to use 10,000 officers from 10 forces.

Boxing has gained an increasingly negative image as boxers have been badly injured and even killed over recent years. However, they remain quick to defend the sport, pointing out that other sports, such as Rugby Union, are more dangerous. Young boxers are not being deterred from wanting to reached advanced levels, often because they feel that there is not really anything else for them to do.
