A vintage year, but only for the lucky

Article Abstract:

There are two clear themes within the survey of the performance of global equity funds produced by Standard & Poor's Fund Research. One is that global equity investors gained significant benefits in the year to Jul 1, 1999, with global stock markets achieving their best performance for at least five years. The other is that the sector was extremely competitive, with the average global equity fund manager falling behind the world index by around 8%. Fund Research indicates that the funds that performed best either had strict rules preventing them moving far from the market by market weightings of the world index or made the right market bets.
