Willi Stoph
Article Abstract:
Politician Willi Stoph began his working life as an apprentice in the building industry. He joined the youth movement of the Communist Party of Germany in 1928, enrolling in the Communist Party of Germany in 1931. He undertook national service in the artillery from 1935 to 1937, and subsequently served in the Wehrmacht during the second world war. He was head of the Socialist Unity Party's economic policy department between 1948 and 1950, and then became one of the secretaries of the party's Central Committee. He was Minister for National Defence from 1956 to 1960.

Erich Muckenberger
Article Abstract:
Politician Erich Muckenberger joined the Social Democratic Party youth organization in 1924. He undertook illegal political activity after the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, and in 1935 spent several months in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He rejoined the Social Democratic Party in 1945, and was appointed secretary of the new Socialist Unity Party in Chemnitz, Germany, in 1946. He became chairman of the central control commission of the Socialist Unity Party in 1971.

The Austrian politician Josef Klaus died on Jul 25 2001 aged 90. He was the first post war Chancellor to win an absolute majority in the Austrian government between 1966 and 1970.
