William Newland
Article Abstract:
Potter and teacher William Newland ran a butcher's shop in Masterton, New Zealand, with his brother during the Depression. He served in Greece and the Middle East during the second world war, and spent three years as a prisoner of war in Italy and Germany. He studied painting at Chelsea School of Art in London, England, between 1945 and 1947, and then trained as a teacher at the Institute of Education at London University. He gained much of his inspiration from Mediterranean culture.

William Ruck Keene
Article Abstract:
Safari operator William Keene played a key role in establishing safaris in Zambia. He made a number of trips across Africa in his late teenage years, and later returned there and went into partnership with Ben Parker. Their Tongabezi enterprise is now made up of five camps located along the upper and lower reaches of the Zambezi. Keene was particularly concerned to ensure that his activities showed great respect for Zambia's culture, people and wildlife.

Beryl Dean
Article Abstract:
Embroiderer, designer for ballet, teacher and writer Beryl Dean was born in 1911. She studied at the Royal School of Needlework and Bromley School of Art. She later taught at Eastbourne School of Art and designed and made costumes.
