Winners avoid running with the herd
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that Jan is a very good month in which to buy shares in countries across the world. Indeed, of the 20 countries in the Morgan Stanley Capital Market Index, only Austria does not show shares on average outperforming in Jan. Taking a wider view, the three months from Dec to Feb are the most productive quarter of the year, with this period accounting for an average of two-thirds of all returns achieved by stock markets worldwide in a year. A number of theories have been put forward as to why this should be the case, including the possibility that investors reassess their holdings at the beginning of the year.

When will the Dow peak?
Article Abstract:
The Dow Jones index has risen 25.5% so far in 1997, following a rise of 26% in 1996. Some observers believe that share prices have been pushed very high by a significant development in the US economy. However, others warn that investors should not expect share prices to continue to rise indefinitely. It is unlikely that there will be a sudden sharp fall in share prices, but it may be wise to prepare for such an event. Astute investors should consider mentally reducing the value of their holdings by around 20%.

Japan's crisis will be good news for some
Article Abstract:
The prospects for Japan's economy seem very bleak. Consumers are very unwilling to spend, and it is likely that any new efforts to revive the economy will be ineffective. However, this does not mean that investors should not consider the Japanese stock market as a potential location for part of their long-term equity savings. The Japanese stock market may well decline further, but the indications are still positive for Japanese equities on a long-term view.
