Wisdom from a sheepish liberal
Article Abstract:
European politicians should pay careful attention to the tone of Bill Clinton's recent State of the Union address, as it gives an indication of the direction which they themselves will have to take before very long. As economics, technology and demography become more international in nature, it is quite possible that the middle-class revolt which is currently sweeping across the US will start to affect Europe too. There are already signs of this happening in the extensive debate over appropriate controls on governments' budgetary policy.

Wisdom from the feet up
Article Abstract:
Designers often fall into the trap of designing a product without really considering whether it will be suitable for the particular situation in which it will be used. This was the case with artificial limbs based on western designs being used in Asia, where they were not suitable for local conditions. Later, the design was considerably adapted and users found it much more comfortable and effective. Cases of this kind show that it is much better to design from the bottom up than from the top down.

What really makes us happy?
Article Abstract:
Economists have traditionally focused on measuring quantity, but they are now looking at ways of assessing the economic value of quality too. It is clearly very hard to measure concepts such as tranquillity and happiness, but efforts are being made to adjust GNP figures to account for quality of life, the depletion of natural resources and similar qualitative issues. Taking this approach will give a deeper insight into people's aspirations and will allow them to know themselves better.
