Article Abstract:
The theremin, which produces a distinctive wailing sound, can be regarded as the world's first electronic instrument. It was developed in 1920 by Russian inventor Leon Theremin. It is the only musical instrument to be played with no actual physical contact, and is difficult to play proficiently. One of the few skilled theremin players was Samuel Hoffman, a chiropodist from New York, NY, who also played the violin for the NBC band.
