Would-be ventures wind up
Article Abstract:
Corporate venturing has not been successful in the UK and the recession threatens its demise. The Corporate Venturing Centre was set up by the National Economic Development Office in 1988. Recent interest has only been shown by one company, British Gas. Corporate venturing offers corporations technical innovations and products allowing them market leads. Corporate venturing has thrived in the US and Europe. The US chemicals company Monsanto has undertaken corporate venturing since 1972 and has a fund of $50 million.

We'll fight them on the forecourts
Article Abstract:
The UK's petrol stations have remained almost completely unchanged over the last two decades. They are all more or less the same size, and offer very similar services. This contrasts sharply with extensive changes in other sectors of the retail industry. However, this may change as BP and Mobil move to merge their European petrol retailing businesses. It is very likely that there will be further consolidation in the sector, which is facing growing pressure from supermarkets.
