Warning: turbulent market conditions ahead
Article Abstract:
It is possible to see with hindsight that it was wrong to predict that the London stock market would not rise in 1997. In fact, the FTSE 100 index increased by 25%. It was also wrong to predict that Wall Street would decline, as the Dow actually rose by more than 20% over the year. The handover of Hong Kong did not, as many observers had predicted, prompt an international crisis with serious consequences for financial markets. It is still possible that Wall Street is very overvalued, and it may begin to decline in 1998.
