'Yes' by a whisker. Now the deals begin
Article Abstract:
An independent Welsh Assembly has been approved by 50.3% of those who voted in the referendum on devolution. Of the total electorate in Wales, only 25% voted in favour of a Welsh Assembly. The vote was against a Welsh Assembly in Cardiff, Wales, where the Assembly will be located. The Conservative party has interpreted the closeness of the vote as an indication of the danger of dividing Wales. Those against Welsh devolution believe that they would have won if the Welsh vote had been held on the same day as the devolution vote in Scotland.

The sleepy Welsh dragon sniffs freedom
Article Abstract:
Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru has considerable support in rural areas of north and west Wales, but very little support in the south. It depends heavily on the vote of Welsh speakers, and has only limited backing in areas where Welsh is not widely spoken. However, it is confident that it will gain increased support in the forthcoming general election, with particular advantage coming from the issue of Welsh devolution. It believes that it will particularly gain votes from people who have previously support the Conservative party.

Wrong-footed by the Welsh question
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly widely recognized in the UK Conservative party that continued opposition to Welsh devolution could leave the party permanently weak in Wales once a Welsh assembly comes into being. The party currently has no Welsh MPs at all, and has only 42 local councillors there, compared with 730 for the Labour party. It seems likely that the Welsh will vote in favour of a Welsh assembly, and the Conservative party should therefore try to achieve some representation there.
