You can't kill bookworms
Article Abstract:
Many observers felt that the collapse of the Net Book Agreement, a price-fixing system which kept book prices artificially high, in Sep 1995 would have a very negative impact on British literature. They predicted that publishers would have to drastically reduce their lists and cut advances and that small booksellers would have to close down. However, this has not been the case. New technology is replacing books to a certain extent, but many people still enjoy purchasing books and the market share of the most popular books has not risen at the expense of less mainstream publications.

Buy a baby, save a life
Article Abstract:
Recent television coverage of the very poor conditions in Chinese orphanages will inevitably prompt many inquiries from couples in the UK about the possibility of adopting a Chinese baby. Adopting from abroad has often been portrayed in a negative light, with those seeking to do so being seen as colluding with kidnappers. There are often many official barriers to inter-country adoption too. Adopting from abroad will certainly not solve all the problems of the developing world, but willing couples should be allowed to make a small contribution.

Who pays for a child to grow tall?
Article Abstract:
Bromley health authority has drawn up a 'red list' of very expensive drugs which GPs are no longer permitted to prescribe. The health authority believes that hospitals should pay for these drugs, as its contracts with hospitals cover treatment for the conditions covered by these drugs. However, hospital consultants are also being told by their managers not to prescribe certain drugs. This controversy is part of growing concern about the rationining which is now being seen everywhere within the NHS.
