Article Abstract:
The proprietors of Saga magazine, which is aimed at the over-50s and has almost 50,000 readers, are shortly to apply to the UK Radio Authority for three licences, one covering Yorkshire, England, another the Midlands region of the UK and another a place on the national network. Saga Director of Radio Ron Coles believes that there is a very strong potential for a radio station aimed at the over-50s, a population group set to expand considerably in the period to 2019. People in their 50s and 60s now represent an extremely significant element of the UK economy.

The life and soul of the party
Article Abstract:
Groucho Club founder Anthony Mackintosh acknowledges that he has influenced the atmosphere in the club, even though many of its members do not really know who he is. He believes that he has been able to overcome the cycle of popularity often associated with clubs, as his club has been open since 1985. He emphasizes that he takes a very strong stance against the use of drugs by the club's members or employees. He is very interested in contemporary classical music, and also enjoys eating and drinking.

Just too good to be true
Article Abstract:
Calls by nurses in the UK to stop using Florence Nightingale as the profession's patron have raised questions about the sort of people selected as patrons, leaders and icons. Heroes are seen as embodying the virtues of a particular profession or group of people, and must not be confused with real people. In modern society, patrons simply act to engage public sympathy for a particular cause, and the nature of what they are supporting does not need to have any particular relevance to their life.
