Young, gifted, black - and a living reproach to our racist school system
Article Abstract:
Many schools in the UK are guilty of institutional racism, according to a report from the Office for Standards in Education. Children from ethnic minorities often fall victim to racial stereotyping, and teachers generally do not expect them to perform well. This is why Bangladeshi, black Caribbean, Pakistani and gypsy traveller children tend not to reach the same academic standards as white children. The report also highlights the fact that most teachers are not intentionally racist. Racial discrimination has not been a problem for 17-year-old Aisha Phoenix, who achieved very high grades at GCSE.

The lost art of learning
Article Abstract:
The UK's schools are making great efforts to ensure that high standards are maintained in cultural life and that children and young adults do not merely focus on trivial matters such as soap operas. They must follow strict curriculum guidelines, and it is no longer regarded as acceptable simply to teach from the point the majority of children are at. Culture has become a compulsory topic in primary schools, with pupils being introduced to the most significant aspects of art and music. Child-centred learning is being replaced with more structured methods of teaching.

Do not jump to conclusions
Article Abstract:
Parents in the UK now have access to a great deal of information about secondary schools. However, many observers believe that some of this information is misleading, particularly if it does not take into account the social background of a school's pupils. Both politicians and teachers are now seeking a way of comparing schools which takes into consideration differences in intakes and ranks them on the basis of the progress their pupils make.
