A little rain on the Parade
Article Abstract:
BBC Controller of Millennial Projects Nicholas Kenyon and George Benjamin, Artistic Consultant to Radio 3's 'Sounding the Century' project, have focused on concert music and opera for 'Endless Parade: Classics of British Music,' the culminating series of the 20th century retrospective they have been organizing since 1996. Questions must be raised about how this series can claim to represent the 'best' of musical life in the UK since 1945 when it takes no account of film scores, jazz, chamber music, instrumental works or light music. This series would have been better if more effort had been made to rediscover some music that has faded into obscurity.
