You've got to be cruel to be kind
Article Abstract:
The best pruning works with, rather than against, a plant. It is vital before starting to prune to consider the essential qualities of the plant concerned. Some plants may need to be moved to another position, rather than pruning them in a way which goes against how they grow naturally. It is important not to prune in a random way simply to keep a garden tidy. Each shrub needs a slightly different approach, and all the shrubs in a garden should not simply be cut down in the same way.

Now, the sculptor's tale
Article Abstract:
Good pruning needs considerable care and attention. It is important to look at the shrub from all angles as you are pruning it, taking care to remove an even amount of foliage from each side in order to maintain the shrub's balance. Particular attention should be given to very rapidly growing shrubs, which can dominate the garden if left unattended for too long. When undertaken properly, pruning can be used to influence a shrub's growth patterns.

Tough love in a warm climate
Article Abstract:
Advice on summer pruning jobs is presented. With philadelphus, a third of the stems should be cut out each year when it has finished flowering, removing them as low to the ground as possible. For wisteria, the best approach is to remove half in the summer and half in Feb. Other plants that need summer pruning include pyracantha and ceanothus.
