The American Academy of Pediatricians now recommends the widespread use of Varivax, Merck & Co's vaccine against chicken pox, but critics charge that the virus may not confer lasting immunity from the common childhood disease. Other critics note that the disease itself is rarely life-threatening.

Edible vaccines

Vaccine manufacturers have begun researching ways in which food can be genetically engineered to make vaccines as an alternate way to distribute needed vaccines in remote areas, or areas in which vaccines are not a readily accepted medical practice. The research efforts are described.
