A rare glimpse of an early human face
Article Abstract:
An upper jaw found in Ethiopia in 1994 and identified as belonging to the genus Homo has been securely dated at about 2.33 million years old, making it the oldest official Homo on record. Classification of the species would help clarify the lineage from australopithecus to homo.

Homo erectus in Java: a 250,000-year anachronism
Article Abstract:
An interdisciplinary team of scientists has redated two fossil sites in Java and concluded that Homo erectus was still living in Java 27,000 to 53,000 years ago. This is 250,000 years after H erectus was believed to have been extinct in Asia.

A new face for human ancestors
Article Abstract:
Hominid fossils found at Atapuerca, Spain, date back 780,000 years and appear to represent the oldest known ancestor of both Neanderthals and modern humans. The new species has been named Homo antecessor.
