Did a blast of sea-floor gas usher in a new age?
Article Abstract:
Univ of Michigan researchers believe that a humongous release of methane gas from the ocean 55 million years ago caused climatic changes that altered the animal population. The methane warming could account for the abrupt appearance of modern mammals and the extinction of ocean foraminifera.

Ancient sea-level swings confirmed
Article Abstract:
Data from ocean drilling projects confirm the authenticity of the record of sea level changes over the past 250 million years compiled by Exxon scientists in the 1970s. However, scientists have little information on the cause of the oldest shifts in sea level.
