A scourge of small arms
Article Abstract:
Easy access to inexpensive and deadly small arms contributes to killing of civilians in many war-torn regions of the world. Ten billion dollars in legal trade, plus as much as $3 billion in black market transactions of small weapons each year, fuel conflicts in Africa, the Balkans, and other areas. Global arms control agreements, stricter standards by arms suppliers, international peacekeeping efforts, and better tracking of arms trades may reduce the killing.

Invisible wounds: medical researchers have recently begun to address the mental health effects of war on civilians
Article Abstract:
Science is helping to quantify the profound mental health effects of war, and may be closer to helping traumatized victims. Improved screening tools, culturally-appropriate diagnostic criteria, lay interviewers, and improved statistical methods have identified high rates of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder among civilians in war-torn regions. International aid organizations have begun providing mental health services in conflict areas.
