A solar aquatic system septage treatment plant
Article Abstract:
A septic tank system in Harwich, MA offers a potential solution to the problems encountered in the on-site teatment of wastewater being discharge by US homes and industries. The tank, which was placed in operation in 1990, uses a biologically designed septage treatment system called the Solar Aquatic treatment system (SAS) and is capable of treating 4.5 cubic meter of wastewater in a day. An evaluation conducted by the Massachussetts Department of Environmental Protection shows that SAS produces Class I drinking-water.

Biodegradation of high concentrations of tetrachloroethene in a continuous flow column system
Article Abstract:
Investigations into the anaerobic degradation of perchloroethylene (PCE) in a continuous flow column showed that the eventual degradation of PCE into vinyl chloride and ethylene is dependent on the molar ratio between methanol and PCE. Methanol acted as the electron donor which allowed PCE to be degraded to vinyl chloride via dechlorination, with acetogenesis degrading vinyl chloride to ethylene. PCE degradation to vinyl chloride was found to increase when the molar ratio between PCE and methanol dropped below 5.
