ATCC plant-virus collection threatened

Plant biologists warn that cost-cutting measures in the planned move of the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) from Maryland to Manassus, VA, could jeopardize its diverse plant virus collection. The ATCC dismissed the collection's curator and plans to share a greenhouse rather than build one.

Ecologist David Tilman reports evidence that biodiversity benefits ecosystems as a whole, but that populations of individual species are much less stable in diverse systems than in simple ones, and may become extinct altogether.
