Accumulation of organochlorine pesticides and PCBs by semipermeable membrane devices and Mytilus edulis in New Bedford Harbor
Article Abstract:
The accumulation of contaminants, including organochlorine and PCBs, by aquatic species vary according to the physical, chemical, and biological processes that affect exposure concentrations, contaminant bioavailability, and the organism's physiological state. Semipermeable membrane devices, a sampling methods based on the use of indigenous or transplanted bivalve mollusks, offer a possible way for estimating total exposure concentrations without much inconsistency that may result from the above problems.

A kinetics model for predicting the accumulation of PCBs in phytoplankton
Article Abstract:
A predictive model for the accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in phytoplankton that incorporates the dynamics of the process is developed and tested. An evaluation of the model's performance revealed that it made a significantly better reproduction of the observed accumulation of PCBs in phytoplankton compared to the traditional equilibrium model. Its increased predictiveness, which is attributed to the use of a phytoplankton growth parameter, was observed during periods of intense growth.

Settling removal rates of PCBs into the Northwestern Atlantic derived from 238U-234Th disequilibria
Article Abstract:
Particle decomposition and/or compound desorption appear to have caused the decrease in the fraction of polychlorinated chlorobiphenyls (PCBs) settling flux that approaches the sediments with both water column depth and with aqueous solubility of the congeners. Congeners with increasing chlorination, on the other hand, may have caused the sharp decrease in 234 Th-derived surface ocean fluxes far from the continental source.
