Africa and America: desert connections
Article Abstract:
The ecological history of the grasslands of the American Southwest can help resolve the ongoing debate over desertification in the African Sahel. While the desert conditions in the Sahel have been exaggerated, the resilience of both ecosystems has brought into focus the the causes of desertification. The American experience suggest the occurrence of extreme variability in the Sahel region. Despite the withdrawal of the desert, institutional systems in the Sahel need to be strengthened to withstand climatic variations. These steps will render the desert landscape more favorable to the people's needs.

Desertification: what's in a name?
Article Abstract:
The prime cause for the failure of the war against desertification is the ambiguity of the term and the lack of political will. Although consensus now exists on a refined definition, any viable anti-desertification effort needs to take into account the global dimensions of the problem. Desertification control programs have long gestation periods and investors are wary of waiting long for returns on investments. Successful anti-desertification programs which address improved ecosystem management will lead to reduction in cost and decrease social unrest while increasing international amity.
