Aircraft parking for passenger services at Scandinavian Airlines: an organizational study in using early decision support technology
Article Abstract:
Scandinavian Airlines embarked in 1983 on an attempt to improve passenger services by developing a parking plan for aircraft to reduce the irritation passengers felt at having to walk an awkward stretch across the tarmac in order to get to the terminal. The result was ARGUS, an optimal aircraft parking plan, which would be used each night for the next day's planes. The system pointed out the importance of understanding objectives, planning a course of action, and achieving flexibility through awareness of the weakness of existing management techniques.
