Maxell Europe, a subsidiary of Japan's Hitachi-Maxell, is a major manufacturer of magnetic and optical storage media. The company's European arm is based in Telford, Shropshire, and has the monthly capacity to make 6 million floppy disks, 4 million audio tapes, 2.5 million video cassettes and 500,000 MiniDiscs. Maxell's manufacturing process has evolved to meet the increasingly competitive market conditions, with some components being made in China and Japan in order to keep costs as low as possible.

UK companies ITW Lombard and CWL are using specialist software to improve quality management. Automobile parts maker ITW Lombard's software allows for zero defects by identifying failure modes in parts or processes. On the other hand, presswork and wire forming company CWL's use of software to create and manage documents has translated into time-savings of 70%. The software also allows the monitoring of quality manuals and work instructions.
