Airport facility treats deicing runoff
Article Abstract:
The EPA is conducting a study at the Albany International Airport on the proper disposal of deicing fluids. The latter are usually made up of ethylene, diethylene or propylene glycols. The airport has installed an anaerobic fluidized bed biological treatment system which uses granulated activate carbon (GAC) as the biomass carrier. Water is pumped through a bed of sand or GAC to fluidize the media. Each GAC particle is coated with microorganism which convert organic carbon and produce byproducts such as methane, carbon dioxide and some new biomass.

Testing facility simulates attitude, temperature swings
Article Abstract:
Sverdrup Technologies is constructing three wind tunnels in Allen Park, MI, that will test the drivability of automobiles. The wind tunnels can simulate any temperature and altitude anywhere around the world. Presently, new car models have to be brought to various facilities across the US to collect data on the car's response to various altitudes and temperatures. Ford Motor Co will be the major of the facility and has already bought most of the available time slots for the next 10 years.
